LONDON RESEARCH TRIP 2016

Northern6 visited the Imperial War Museum during our research trip to London, aiming to find inspiration for our current performance ProjectSword. During this research period we have become fascinated by the idea of projection as a means to visualise the conflict without directly attempting to recreate this onstage. Throughout the museum we found striking relics to conflicts of by gone eras resembling clearly the futility of war and its impact on human-kind. This has given us influence to create theatre imagery that would respond to objects within the space, a bath for example, the simplest of everyday objects but how we interact with this can open up new avenues of interpretation for our audience. For the time period we are looking around the hand washing of clothing can and does create a beautiful image in the space. Allowing Lana to play with this unlocked a form of strong but nurturing female presence that in times of war, would keep Britain afloat.

The museum as a whole was of great influence and is a pivotal moment in our research process. Projections could be seen throughout the museum to provide a backdrop to each individual space, thus helping to create a stunning audio-visual in each room. It is this that has driven us to think about how we can use projection in performance to create our own atmospheres and experiences for our audience.
